Workshop 19 - Choka
A Choka is
related to the Japanese Haiku, but is considered the long
form. It consists of alternating lines of 5 and 7 syllables and
ends
in two lines of 7 syllables. Thus it would go
5-7-5-7-5-7-5...7-7.
Some of these poems go on for more than 100 lines and many were
made
by various poets each adding a small part. These poems were not
only used to convey thoughts and emotions, but also as a form of
meditation. Clear your mind, "sense" the world around
you and try
to put what you feel into words. With so few syllables to work
with,
you must not only be deep but also brief. That's the challenge!
For this workshop you may either create a Choka on your own, or
you
may begin one and then include (cont.) at the bottom so that
others
may be allowed to add to it. After everyone has had an
opportunity
to add something, you may add the final part and place (end) at
the
bottom.
